Last week – in a bipartisan vote - the US House of Representatives made history by passing the Equality Act, a bill that would protect LGBTQ people from discrimination in the workplace among other settings. When it comes to cultivating workplace cultures of belonging, this legislation will help dismantle systemic barriers to economic opportunities that far too many LGBTQ workers in the United States still endure, 50 years after the Stonewall Riots.
While passing the Equality Act would be an enormous victory for the movement for LGBTQ equity & justice, those of us who work for employers with LGBTQ workplace protections understand that laws alone will not change a workplace’s culture. Change agents within the workplace are important stakeholders necessary to shift a workplace’s culture to align with the organization’s stated commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
To better understand current workplace barriers, a snapshot of LGBTQ employees collective experiences reveals:
47% of LGBTQ workers remain closeted at work, and of these people, 73% are more likely to leave their companies in the next three years.
One in four LGBTQ workers report experiencing employment discrimination in the last five years.
Transgender and nonbinary people experience unemployment at three times the national average.
In 2014, more than one in four LGBTQ adults (2.2 million people) struggled to put food on the table for themselves and their families.
For those of us who identify as workplace leaders, visionaries, and change agents, we have an enormous responsibility ahead of us to dismantle these very real and significant cultural barriers to ensure that our LGBTQ colleagues feel a sense of safety, trust and belonging in the workplace.
